After World War II, a steamship is taking the Russian émigré Alexei Golovin, his French wife and son back to his mother country, the Soviet Union. The successful doctor and his wife are full of hope. Like the many other emigrants who left Russia after the 1917 revolution, he is returning not to the country of the Bolsheviks but to the country which has defeated fascism.
